A Solo Trip to Miyagi, Tohoku — Part 2: Kesennuma, Naiwan

English is followed by the Japanese translation text in turn.

Today’s destination is Kesennuma, where I’ll be staying for the night. I get back on the BRT at Shizugawa Station and head toward Minami-Kesennuma, where my hotel is located.

From Shizugawa toward Kesennuma, the BRT runs along the coast. That doesn’t mean you can see the coastline the entire way, but for someone like me, who normally visits mountains and doesn’t have much to do with the sea, the occasional views of the coast through the window are refreshing.

At some of the stations along the way, many students got on their way home from school. It also made me realize how important the BRT has become as a means of transportation for local residents.

Savoring Autumn Bonito

Since I left Minamisanriku an hour earlier than planned, I arrived at today’s hotel, Hotel Ikkeikaku, at around 5 p.m. It’s conveniently located about a five-minute walk from Minami-Kesennuma Station.

Kesennuma has a type of hot spring called a sodium chloride strong saline spring, which has a high salt concentration. Because of the high salt content, you can apparently enjoy a “floating bath,” where your body actually floats in the water. I’ve never tried it, but I wonder if it’s something like the experience of floating in the Dead Sea?

As a hot spring hunter, this was something I didn’t want to miss. However, my skin wasn’t in good condition at the time, and it was easy to imagine how painful the highly saline water would feel on my damaged skin. So, reluctantly, I decided to skip this hot spring this time. (Apparently, you can enjoy this type of hot spring at Kesennuma Sunplaza Hotel or Sun Marine Kesennuma Hotel, so if you’re interested, why not give it a try?)

Instead, I chose Hotel Ikkeikaku because it has an artificial radium hot spring, and because I could enjoy tasting different preparations of seasonal bonito for dinner.

By the way, Kesennuma has apparently been No. 1 in Japan for fresh bonito landings for 28 years. It lost the top spot in 2025 because of a poor catch, but apparently reclaimed it again this year. When I thought of bonito, I had always pictured Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku. I really didn’t know much at all!

For dinner, the bonito was served in three different ways: sashimi, bonito tataki (lightly seared bonito),and marinated bonito. Everything was incredibly fresh and had a wonderful texture! Seafood eaten right where it is caught is simply the best. The rice, cooked in a traditional pot, was also beautifully fluffy and naturally sweet, so of course I had another helping.

By the way, bonito caught between September and November is called modori-gatsuo, or “returning bonito.” These bonito head south again after feeding in the northern waters and building up plenty of fat. They have a rich flavor and a pleasantly chewy texture. If you have a chance to visit Kesennuma during this season, be sure to give it a try.

The hotel’s radium hot spring is artificial, but the temperature was just right and the water felt gentle. It is said to have benefits such as improving circulation, boosting metabolism, and helping with fatigue. Since it was a weekday and there weren’t many guests, I was able to enjoy the bath all to myself.

The bath is on the sixth floor, and there is a lounge with a view on the same floor, where you can relax and enjoy the scenery after your bath. There is also a complimentary drinks corner on the first floor, where you can help yourself to coffee, tea, and other drinks. It’s a nice little service.

I hadn’t gotten enough sleep, and I was already a little tired from the day’s travel. After a soak in the hot spring, I quickly fell asleep.

Morning at Kesennuma Fish Market

The Kesennuma Fish Market is about a five-minute walk from Hotel Ikkeikaku. I heard that you can watch the fish being unloaded for free from the second floor of the market, so I decided to take a walk there before breakfast, even though it was drizzling lightly.

The fish market is a long building, and I couldn’t figure out where the viewing area was, so I wandered around for a while. I hardly saw anyone and wondered what was going on. Luckily, I spotted a fisherman smoking at a designated smoking area, so I asked him where the viewing area was. He told me it was way over there.

I walked a little farther and found the entrance on the northernmost side, near Umi no Ichi. (The fish market is closed on Sundays, public holidays, and during the New Year holidays. Watching the fish being unloaded is free, and paid tours also seem to be available. See the reference information below for details.)

I visited on a Friday morning. There was only one boat unloading its catch, so the market was relatively quiet. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see a large and dynamic fish landing, but there seemed to be quite a lot of red snapper being unloaded that day. I don’t normally visit fish markets in my everyday life, and I rarely even have a reason to go to a fish shop, so seeing whole fish like this was quite interesting.

When I went up to the third-floor parking area, I found lots of seabirds, including gulls and black-tailed gulls, hanging around and eyeing the fish. They look similar, but they have subtle differences. These days, it’s fun to take a photo and use handy tools like Google Lens or AI to instantly find out what kind of bird it is and learn more about it. In the end, I stayed there for almost an hour. Before I knew it, it was almost time for breakfast, so I hurriedly left the market.

According to Google Lens, from left to right: a juvenile black-tailed gull, a black-tailed gull, and a slaty-backed gull.
Google Lens

The highlights of the hotel’s breakfast are “shark fin and soy milk chawanmushi” and “charcoal-grilled aged silver salmon.” The shark fin chawanmushi had a light flavor and a smooth, silky texture. The silver salmon had a rich, full-bodied flavor, so I had another helping of rice.

At home, I usually keep breakfast light with some bread and coffee. But whenever I stay at a ryokan or hotel, somehow I can eat more than twice as much as I normally do. It’s rather strange, isn’t it? I finished with a cup of black coffee and was completely satisfied.

The Stylish Uchiwan Area

After checking out of the hotel, I spent the morning wandering around the Uchiwan area. The sky was unfortunately cloudy, but the weather was cool and just right for walking.

The Uchiwan area has stylish commercial and tourist facilities, including cafés, restaurants, a brewery, general goods stores, souvenir shops, a fresh fish shop, and even a community radio station.

I spent time at one of the cafés simply staring out at the sea and doing nothing in particular. I think I was there for more than an hour. Isn’t spending time doing nothing but looking at the scenery a real luxury—and something we actually need? When was the last time you just sat around and did nothing?

If you cross the large bridge you can see from here, you can get to Kesennuma Oshima Island. The island was also the setting for an NHK morning drama “Okaeri Mone” a few years ago. I watched the drama, but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time or the right means of transportation to visit its filming locations this time.

Next time I visit Kesennuma, I’d like to explore Oshima and the Karakuwa Peninsula as well. In the afternoon, I’ll head to another earthquake memorial site, the Kesennuma East Japan Earthquake Memorial Museum. I’ll take the BRT from Kesennuma Station and head for Rikuzen-Hashikami, the nearest station.
